20162016 Finalists

Stephanie Haygarth

I've studied at art schools in Hobart and Canberra and have an honours degree in painting from the ANU. I've been a finalist in a number of national art prizes and have had three solo exhibitions — and appeared in many group shows — in the Canberra area. My latest solo show was at Form Studio and Gallery in Queanbeyan last year.

Artist Statement

I live and work in Ainslie. My studio looks out over the surrounding streets and gardens, so I often find myself absorbed in the views and making quick studies or photographs of them from the window. Sometimes these develop into finished work, as is the case with 'Path'. I'm interested in making quick impressionistic work that uses rough brushstrokes and bold colour to engage emotional responses to the subject matter and to the composition. I found the alternating bars of sun and shadow in this view mesmerising, especially as the figure moving down the path crossed from sunlight to shade and back again, sometimes seeming almost to vanish, ghostlike, into the dark. The depth and richness of the contrast made the slanting shadows appear almost solid. While I watched, the shimmering figure turned the corner at the end of the path, and vanished for good.
