Neet Smith

I migrated from the UK in my 30's and have been here since 1990. I attended the ANU School of Art, graduating in 2000. Although I have been fortunate enough to travel to many parts of the world, it is Canberra that has given me roots. I am very grateful for that, My concerns about the reef are also concerns for this small city as it rapidly grows and changes to meet the needs of a bigger population. I hope there will be a gentle touch on this fragile environment too as we sweep through with our constant demands for more.

Artist Statement

The images I am currently working on attempt to reflect my concerns about the environment, specifically the fragile barrier reef. To my mind, we are 'crossing boundaries' in a reckless and destructive manner. I reference the image of a Petri dish - a comment on the part science plays in both saving and destroying our planet. My images come from my imagined depiction of the billions of creatures and plants struggling to survive the onslaught of our human activities. I try to capture the beauty and the sickness of our reef dwellers.
